Holidays and Commemorations.

We Like Having Time to Ourselves

Micronations love creating holidays for themselves. Many are serious (such as independence days), others not so much (Topin Wagglegammon especially). Sirocco is no different, and our national calendar is filled with days of importance to us. These are divided into three categories:
  • National statutory holidays: Public holidays for the entire country.
  • Provincial and territorial statutory holidays: Public holidays for a select province(s) or territory(/ies).
  • Non-statutory (or cultural) holidays: Commemorative days that are not counted as statutory holidays.
Holidays are regulated under the terms of the Holidays Act 2014.

The Nation Celebrates

Sirocco has adopted a number of holidays celebrated in New Zealand, and added and removed some where it sees fit.
  • Norton Day celebrates Emperor Norton I of the United States and Mexico (1817/18-1881), a revered figure amongst micronationalists.
  • Midyear Day is based on a former (incorrect) belief that June 15 marked the exact middle of the year.
  • Proclamation Day marks the day in 2010 that the decision was made to found Sirocco.
  • Dominion Day is celebrated as the day in 1907 when New Zealand became a dominion. It is marked as an alternative to Waitangi Day.
  • Capitalism Day serves as the business equivalent to Labour Day.
  • Victory Over Communism Day commemorates the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, albeit one day late to accommodate for Boxing/Castor Day.

A Day for Everyone

Most provinces and territories celebrate their day as that on which they were admitted into Sirocco. Four exceptions exist, however:
  • Tent Pegs Day commemorates the day the SDF held the border at Tent Pegs, CA.
  • Maran Day commemorates the former Maran District on the day it was presumed founded.
  • Maxie Day commemorates Esteemed Labrador Maxie Anderson (1998-2013) on the anniversary of her passing.
  • Halvorson Day commemorates the day Halvorson became a province in 2011, not when it became part of Sirocco (Christmas Day 2010).

Here's Where it Gets Silly

The non-statutory holidays have the distinction of holding four of the most curious days of the calendar.
  • Demand Improvement Day stands as a parody of Waitangi Day in New Zealand by mocking its annual protests.
  • September 27 arose as a joke between the Premier and Vice-Premier whereby both parties denied that the day even existed.
  • Topin Wagglegammon is the famous Aerican 'niftyday', which contains an annual theme of frivolity and silliness.
  • Windows Day celebrates the '90s tech subculture in Sirocco by commemorating the launch day of the Windows 1.0 OS.
*Applies to leap years only.
